EQ 192 | Spectroscope |
These plastic spectroscopes can be used to analyze the light emitted by the gas in a gas discharge tube, or the light emitted by a salt or salt solution that has been heated in an open flame. The wavelength scale in the spectroscope allows students to identify the salt that has been heated, or at least to identify the metallic (anions) that are part of the salt. Students will see, first-hand, that each element only emits specific wavelengths of light. This can be used to lead immediately into atomic structure. Later on, during a unit on qualitative analysis the students can use flame test to identify specific metallic ions. CALL 718-975-8135 to purchase. DISCOUNT PRICING: 5 Spectroscopes: $75.00 ($15.00/spectroscope) 10 Spectroscopes: $135.00 ($13.50/spectroscope) More than 10: $12.50/spectroscope |

*** | S17 SCIENCE FILES: The following files are FREE by emailing Click Here and requesting the file you wish. | ***
S17 Science Gas Kit Manual | The document describes all the gas kits designed, built and supplied by S17 Science. It includes suggested instructions for students to do activities using the kits and the Vernier probes and software to study the properties of gases. In addition there are notes for teachers to help teachers use the kits successfully. The document is available in DOCX and PDF file formats. There is also a Vernier Edition of this Manual for use with the Probe Kit EQ 899 To obtain Click Here | FREE
The Avogadro Experiment | The Avogadro Experiment document uses the S17 Science Gas Kit to enable students to discover Avogadro's Principle. Students measure the pressure of several aliquots of two different gases. They then plot pressure versus aliquot. The resulting data coupled with the idea that each 20 mL aliquot of say carbon dioxide under the same conditions would have the same number of molecules enables students to conclude that "equal volumes of all gases at the same temperature and pressure have the same number of molecules". This experiment is not found in texts but it is so fundamental to a student's understanding of introductory chemistry that it should be a part of every introductory chemistry course. The instructions for using the Probe Kit EQ 899 are also available. To obtain Click Here | FREE
It's A Gas |
This is a Word document created by John Eix describing activities and narrative to help teach the properties of gases. The narrative follows a story of inquiry starting with a simple collision model for pressure, making predictions from this model and then designing experiments to test them. As the evidence mounts up from successful predictions the credibility of the model increases. The success of the model gives confidence in creating molecular masses for molecules. There are 6 major labs, two with three parts. The increase in lab activity has been accommodated by reducing time spent on gas law problems from a typical 4 lessons to 2. All problems are solved using the ideal gas equation. The activities have been written to take advantage of the S17 Science gas kits. The document lists objectives, tasks related to gas laws that students can do and lots of problems at various levels of difficulty. There is no charge for this document but S17 Science would appreciate hearing about how you use the document and any successes or non-successes you have with it. Please email JohnFEix@gmail.com with any feedback.

FREE | Relative Masses of Steel Spheres | Relative Masses for Steel Spheres is a student activity using a model of the mass spectrometer, available from Flinn Scientific. In the activity students determine the path of steel spheres using a chord and an angle. From this data and the equation for a simple mass spectrometer students are able to set up relative masses for steel spheres. It reinforces or introduces students to how relative atomic masses were assigned and gives them the opportunity to apply the same reasoning to tangible objects such as steel spheres. Micro Electrolysis of Copper(II) Chloride (aq) | The Micro Electrolysis of Copper(II) Choride(aq) document describes how to use the Vernier Differential Voltage Probe and a micro cell that is constructed from a Petri dish to carry out this electrolysis safely in a high school classroom. Directions for constructing the micro cell are provided. Everything needed to carry out the demonstration with your students, including technology and equipment lists, solution preparation, and a script to help you carry out the lesson. The script describes how to set up a confrontation to introduce electrochemical cells using an electrolytic cell. The chemical reactions require only 4 drops of the copper chloride solution and one drop each of potassium bromide and potassium iodide. Orange Juice Clock Kit - Standard
[EQ 046]
$32.00USD
I have a set of these to introduce elementary students to the idea of converting chemical to electric energy. They're extremely reliable. And, unlike other clock mechanisms I've played with, they really do work using orange juice, magnesium, and copper.
